The eclipsing Cataclysmic Variable GS Pavonis : Evidence for disk radius changes ⋆
We have obtained differential time series photometry of the cataclysmic variable GS Pavonis over a timespan of 2 years. These show that this system is deeply eclipsing (∼2– 3.5 mag) with an orbital period of 3.72 hr. The eclipse depth and out-of-eclipse light levels are correlated. From this correlation we deduce that the disk radius is changing and that the eclipses in the low state are total....
متن کاملPAV ontology: provenance, authoring and versioning
BACKGROUND Provenance is a critical ingredient for establishing trust of published scientific content. This is true whether we are considering a data set, a computational workflow, a peer-reviewed publication or a simple scientific claim with supportive evidence. Existing vocabularies such as Dublin Core Terms (DC Terms) and the W3C Provenance Ontology (PROV-O) are domain-independent and genera...
متن کاملTechnical Note: PAV and the ROC Convex Hull
Classifier calibration is the process of converting classifier scores into reliable probability estimates. Recently, a calibration technique based on isotonic regression has gained attention within machine learning as a flexible and effective way to calibrate classifiers. We show that, surprisingly, isotonic regression based calibration using the Pool Adjacent Violators algorithm is equivalent ...
متن کاملXMM-Newton observations of three short period polars: V347 Pav, GG Leo and EU UMa
We present phase-resolved XMM-Newton data of three short period polars: V347 Pav, GG Leo and EU UMa. All three systems show one dominant accretion region which is seen for approximately half of the orbital cycle. GG Leo shows a strong dip feature in its X-ray and UV light curves which is due to absorption of X-rays from the accretion site by the accretion stream. The emission in the case of EU ...
متن کاملThe PAV algorithm optimizes binary proper scoring rules
There has been much recent interest in application of the pool-adjacent-violators (PAV) algorithm for the purpose of calibrating the probabilistic outputs of automatic pattern recognition and machine learning algorithms. Special cost functions, known as proper scoring rules form natural objective functions to judge the goodness of such calibration. We show that for binary pattern classifiers, t...
